Videotage is a leading non-profit organisation in facilitating, promoting and presenting new media art in Hong Kong. Since 1986, Videotage has developed itself from an umbrella for media artists to a media art and culture network for cross-disciplinary cultural productions and international exchange of ideas and knowledge.

More than ten years have gone by since Hong Kong became a Special Administrative Region of China in 1997. Are we closer to a greater Chinese homeland or are we making ourselves at home here? The compilation comprises recent video works of performances and phenomenon from the meme of the city.

KWAN Sheung Chi, A FLAGS-RAISING-LOWERING CEREMONY AT MY HOME’S CLOTHES DRYING RACK

A response to the 10th anniversary of the establishment of The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of The People’s Republic of China. The HKSAR regional flag was hand-painted by artist Lee Kit following the regulation of, the State’s Standards of The People’s Republic of China, issued by the State Authority of Technical Monitoring. The artist then asked his parents to perform a flags-raising-lowering ceremony at their home’s clothes drying rack, with the hand-painted flag, and the national flag of The People’s Republic of China and The United Kingdom.

Morgan WONG, DEMOLISHING RUMOR

By building and demolishing a 1:12 model of one of the gallery architecture in Caochangdi Art District, the artist wishes to destroy the rumor of the demolition of the art zone through a symbolic and absurd way.

CHOI Sai-Ho, MOVE

Applying click noise, downtempo electronica and the glitch style from the colours of buildings in day time to the myriad twinkling lights of city in night time, “Move” is to show the linear moving motion of Hong Kong cityscape collage on screen by using the creator’s unique style of sound-image synchronization and architectural collage.

- About Artists –

KWAN Sheung Chi

KWAN was born in 1980, Hong Kong. He obtained a third honor B.A. degree in Fine Art from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2003. He failed in applying the MFA programme from the CUHK in 2004 and 2007. In 2000 he was named the “King of Hong Kong New Artist”. In 2002 “Kwan Sheung Chi Touring Series Exhibitions, Hong Kong” was toured in 10 major exhibition venues in Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Art Centre presented “A Retrospective of Kwan Sheung Chi”. In 2003, he set up a studio in Fotan industrial district, and since then became an active member of the “Fotanian” artists’ studios complex. From 2004 he became a nine-to-fiver in Central. On 1st January 2008, he determined not to sell any of his artworks for 3 years. However, he broke his pledge and the statement was auctioned during his solo show “No matter. Try again. Fail again.” on 15th October 2009. In addition to his studio practice, he co-found the Hong Kong Arts Discovery Channel (HKADC) in February 2009, a web-based channel that aims at promoting critical discourse through interviews with artists, curators, critics and the audiences. He is also a founding member of local art groups, hkPARTg (Political Art Group) and Woofer Ten, which both experiment practicing of art in relation to local politics, social issues and the communities. In 2009, He had been awarded the Starr Foundation Fellowship from the Asian Cultural Council, to take part in an international residency program in New York, USA. His artworks haven’t widely exhibited around the world, and he has never participated in any major exhibitions held internationally.

Morgan WONG

WONG was born in Hong Kong, has exhibited his works in solo exhibitions with the Para/Site Art Space Central (Hong Kong); 2P Contemporary Art Gallery (Hong Kong); OYOYO Art Center (Sapporo); Videotage (Hong Kong). Shortlisted in The Sovereign Asian Art Prize in 2012, Hong Kong Art Biennale in 2010 and winner of the 2008 Silver Award at the Hong Kong Independent Film & Video Awards, Wong has been invited to present internationally including Sao Paulo (18th Videobrasil, upcoming); Basel (Liste 17); Moscow (Moscow Museum of Modern Art), London (Turbine Hall, Tate Modern); Karlsruhe (Media Museum, ZKM); Turin (Turin Palace Museum); Sapporo (Sapporo Archive Museum); Hong Kong (Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong Arts Centre); Perth (Fremantle Art Centre); Seoul (Alt. Space Loop); Taipei (Soka Art Center). Wong have delivered talks at venues including Art Basel 43 (Basel, 2012); UCCA (Beijing, 2010). Wong’s works are featured in publications and journals encompassing, “Hong Kong Artists / 20 Portraits” (2011, Verlag fur moderne Kunst, ISBN 978-3-86984-322-3); “Hong Kong Eye: Contemporary Hong Kong Art” (2012, Skira Editore, ISBN 978-8-85721-461-0); Yishu – Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art (May 2011); Hong Kong Gallery Guide (May & Oct 2011). Wong has graduated from his Master of Fine Arts degree at the Slade School of Fine Art in London in 2013.

CHOI Sai-Ho

CHOI is an electronic musician and audio-visual artist, has obtained a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Media at the City University of Hong Kong in 2008. He was selected as the first Hong Kong Chinese musician to join the Red Bull Music Academy 2006 in Melbourne, Australia; the Hong Kong’s Top 20 Musicians in 2008 and the Best of Hong Kong Indie 2009 Number One by Hong Kong Time Out Magazine; the CNNGO Best Hong Kong bands in 2011. He received the Award of Young Artist (Media Arts) by “Hong Kong Arts Development Awards 2012″, Hong Kong Arts Development Council in 2013. Sai-Ho has participated in over 40 audio-visual performances for music festivals, art programmes and events, including Perform Media Festival 2006 (USA), The 14th IFVA Festival: Closing Gala as supporting act for D-Fuse (2009, Hong Kong Arts Centre), Experimentica 2010 (UK), T(h)ree Concert 2011 (Portugal), Clockenflap Music & Arts Festival (2011, West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade, Hong Kong), Electron Festival 2012 (Geneva, Switzerland), Worldtronics 2012 (Berlin, Germany), music performance of Chanel Party from Karl Lagerfeld’s “The Little Black Jacket” photography exhibition and more. His works have been selected to VideoBrazil Festival 2007 (Brazil), Microwave International New Media Arts Festival (Hong Kong), Hong Kong Contemporary Art Biennial 2009, and more. Sai-Ho presented his debut solo multimedia concert “Audio-visual live” in 2010. His second solo concert, “An Audiovisual Concert: Live. Planet. Noise” was presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department in 2013.

Thickest CHOI

CHOI was norn in 1983, Hong Kong. He gained his Bachleor of Social Sciences from the School of Journalism and Communication (2006) and MA from Visual Culture Studies programme at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (2009). His works has been shown in Hong Kong, Taipei, Seoul, London, Romania and New York. He is the creator of the Lawnmap Hong Kong Project, and also one of the coordinator of the Complaints Choir of Hong Kong. In late 2012 he established the Nomadica Digital Community Lab, which aimed at building a new sense of community through online and offline experiments.

WONG Ping

Suppressed by life, and forced to release by his images.

He was awarded 18th IFVA Gold Award (Animation Category), Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors’ Showcase 2013, 12th annual independent music awards (IMA) BEST ALBUM ART.
